John Beauchamp Jones letter, 1861 May 20.

ArchivalResource

John Beauchamp Jones letter, 1861 May 20.

The collection consists of one letter, dated 20 May 1861, from Leroy Pope Walker, appointing John Beauchamp Jones "to a clerkship in this Department." Walker arrived there on 3 June and, as printed Richmond stationery came into use sometime later, this is an obviously back-dated formalization of Jones' appointment done before Walker resigned in September, though technically one of the earliest dates in existence on Confederate Richmond stationery. The text of the letter is in Jones' hand with Walker's signature as secretary of war.
